5-Minute Fall Reflection Exercise

5-Minute Fall Reflection Exercise

Fall isn't just about cozying up, drinking pumpkin spice lattes, staying warm, and preparing for festivities and family time. It's also about spending time with yourself, cozying up to who you are at your core, and preparing for family time with yourself - not by yourself, but with yourself. As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, take a moment to turn inward with this autumn-inspired reflection exercise.

5 Minute Fall Reflection Exercise

Gather Your Thoughts
Gather Your Thoughts

Step 1: Gather Your Thoughts (1 minute)

Find a quiet space and take a few deep breaths. Picture a vibrant autumn leaf in your mind. As you do this, reflect on three different versions of yourself: childhood, adolescence, and the version of you from 10-15 years ago (or 5 years ago if there's overlap).

Step 2: Seasons of Change (2 minutes)

Go back in time with each version of yourself. Introduce the current you to these past versions as if you've just met. Don't assume they know who you are now. Consider:

  • What immediately comes to mind?

  • Are you excited to share your accomplishments?

  • Do you feel a sense of dread, thinking they might be disappointed?

  • What have you been able to do within your existence, internally and externally?

Then, ask each version of yourself:

  • What do they want for you?

  • What do they need?

  • What did they miss out on?

  • What does the current version of you need to need?

Remember, don't judge yourself or look for ways to be the problem. Don't lose hope, and don't criticize your past selves either.

Step 3: Identify Themes (1 minute)

Listen to what your past selves are telling you. What themes are they focusing on? Consider:

  • Safety

  • Security

  • Self-efficacy

  • A sense of self

  • Justice

  • Belonging

Determine one word, one focus, one theme that can drive you forward. Write it down and put it up everywhere - on post-its, on your mirror, on your dash, or on the back of your hand.

Step 4: Set Autumn Intentions (30 seconds)

Based on the theme you've identified, set one intention for personal growth this fall. It could be a new habit, a mindset shift, or a goal you'd like to achieve.

Step 5: Gratitude Gathering (30 seconds)

List three things you're grateful for in this current season of your life.

Closing Thoughts

Remember, like the trees in autumn, sometimes we need to let go of the old to make room for new growth. Stop spending time focusing on what you don't want or what you're doing wrong. Instead, put your time, effort, and energy into what you need.

Carry this reflection with you as you move through your day, allowing the wisdom of the season to guide your personal growth journey. You're moving forward with purpose, and I'm really proud of you. You're awesome!
