That said, understanding and recognizing anger are crucial steps towards managing it effectively. After all, we can’t change what we don’t understand.

It is not the root emotion itself but a response to other feelings, typically masking underlying primary emotions. These primary emotions tend to be more vulnerable, like fear, hurt, embarrassment, or insecurity. For example, feeling unheard or disrespected can lead to anger as a way of protecting oneself. Review yourself objectively, and focus more on the cause and less on what you did about it (shame doesn’t help!)
